Desert Raiders is the 3rd book in the Imperial Guard series. The others being 15 hours and Rebel Winter.
Written by a new author Lucian Soulban it chronicles the tale of a regiment of Tallern Desert Raiders who have been tasked to investigate a distress call on an uninhabited Imperial Planet.

Tribal rivalry within the regiment plays a big part in the book as the troopers initially spend their time fighting one another trying to avenge old tribal grudges etc.

This all changes once the Tyranids arrive. United by the threat of becoming hive fodder the regiment unites and fights a desperate rear guard action against the vicious Tyranid Hordes.

So honestly? What do I think? It was quick and simple to go through, not terribly long compared to some of the other BL novels. I'm bad with names so I tended to skip over most of the names and besides.. since most of the characters introduced get about 3 pages before they die.. I didn't really see the point.

As last stands go, it was an enjoyable read. The IG fight bravely and brilliantly against foes who do not know fear, have superior weapons and hand to hand ability.  I have to admit visions of Taleban fighters and Suicide Bombers did come to mind occasionally as the battle started to unfold.

As an Imperial Guard Player and fan I highly reconmend this book. You really get a sence of the hopelessness that it is to be an Imperial Guardsman. It was well written and to the point is show that the guard does best and thats die for the emporer. There is one warning after reading this book you may have the urge to get your imperial guard army into combat with some Tyranids!
